Cuthbert "C.O." Simpkins, Sr., DDS, of Shreveport, Louisiana, is a civil rights champion who challenged discriminatory voting practices that disenfranchised thousands of citizens. An Air Force veteran, Simpkins co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and led voter registration drives during the 1950s and 1960s. Threats against his family and the burning of his homes forced him to move. In New York he helped establish York College of CUNY, making higher education accessible to more students. He returned to Louisiana 26 years later and was elected to the state legislature, continuing a life of service. His efforts strengthened communities across America. Dr. Simpkins deserves special recognition and thanks from a grateful nation.
