I would like to petition the US Government to posthumously award Jack Johnson the Medal of Honor for his bravery at the Battle of Milliken’s Bend on June 7th, 1863. He was a Black soldier in the 8th Louisiana Colored Infantry Regiment. He fought so many Confederate soldiers that his rifle barrel was smoking and he shattered the butt of his rifle from hitting the soldiers. He was shot a few times but still kept on fighting until he eventually died. He received no recognition for his extreme bravery and sacrifice.
African Americans constituted 10% of the entire Union Army, and nearly 40,000 died over the course of the war. Approximately 180,000 African-Americans served in the Army. Only 22 received a Medal of Honor.
