Mess Attendant First Class Doris Miller, United States Navy, was awarded the Navy Cross for exceptional courage, presence of mind, and complete disregard for his personal safety while serving on the Battleship U.S.S. WEST VIRGINIA (BB-48), during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. Miller, in the face of a serious fire, assisted in moving his mortally wounded Captain, to a place of safety, he then manned and operated a machine gun, on which he had never been trained , directing fire at attacking Japanese aircraft, and is believed to have shot down at least 5 attacking aircraft before being ordered to leave the bridge.
