Takei, born in 1937 in California, is one of America's most recognizable actors and a tireless advocate for human rights. A brilliant comic intellect with a romantic sensibility that dazzles on screen and off, Takei came to national attention for his breakthrough role alongside one of the most diverse TV casts in history on the 1960s series Star Trek. Takei's legacy as an exemplary American began long before and has continued long after. In his childhood, Takeoff faced internment in World War II prison camps that isolated Japanese Americans despite their contributions to our nation, and in his continuing efforts on stage and screen as well as social media, he never ceases to inspire. Honoring him would be a tribute to the courage of LGBT Americans, Asian Americans, and all who dream.
