Bree Newsome's civil protest in climbing the flag pole and removing the Confederate Battle Flag from the grounds of the South Carolina State House is deserving of the medal. The government of South Carolina lacked the decency to at least remove the flag during the lying in state of the body of Pastor Clementa Pinckney, murdered along with eight others by a Confederate Flag waving racist. Human decency required such a protest. The "in your face" SC law which forbids removing the flag is a sorry excuse for their lack of respect for the nine murdered.
