Malala Yousafzai is a very brave young girl from Pakistan who wants to learn and attend school. She was shot by the Taliban in an assassination attempt in October 2012. She had been targeted for attending school and promoting the idea that other girls should be able to attend school. Her desire to learn is so important to her, that alone makes her a role model. She continued to got to school even when she knew what could happen.

In the United States women and girls have the same educational rights as men and boys. This is not case all around the world. Recognizing Malala could also give hope to other girls. The US should also offer her family sanctuary if they desire it.
