26 year-old Sean Collier, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer, was shot and killed in the line of duty late April 18, 2013, allegedly during a confrontation with the two Boston Marathon bombing suspects, who are believed to have murdered three and reportedly wounded at least 140 others.
On home soil, Officer Collier gave his life defending the United States from enemy combatants, the only such fatality directly related to the hunt for the terrorists. His ultimate sacrifice should be considered the very definition of an "especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States." We, the undersigned, respectfully request that Sean Collier be recognized posthumously with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
