Companies send non-English advertisements to households based on their belief that the household speaks a language other than English. Target and Comcast, for example, send Spanish language advertisements to households with Hispanic-sounding last names-unsolicited, and regardless of whether or not the residents actually speak or read Spanish. Having an ethnic sounding name does not mean one speaks the language historically associated with it-especially in our modern, connected, racially-intermarrying society. Those with other 'foreign' names don't receive ads in Polish or Hindi or French (as an example)-advertisers should not be permitted to racially profile those with Hispanic sounding names and send non-English materials based on name alone.
