Mefloquine is used as protection against the Malaria virus. This drug should be banned due to its dangerous side effects. Other anti-malaria drugs such as Malarone are effective with minimal adverse reactions.
Mefloquine has drastic side effects in many users. Some are psychological, including terrifying nightmares, paranoia, worsening depression, sometimes resulting in suicide. Other side effects are physical, and can range anywhere from heart palpitations and chest pain to vertigo and uncomfortable tingling throughout the body. Just one tablet can remain active for up to several months, causing prolonged fear of serious health problems. Even the U.S. Army has drastically reduced its usage due to its severe side effects. Yet it is still being prescribed to U.S. civilians.
