Asbestos is a known carcinogen and causes mesothelioma a cancer that affects the lining of various organs, most commonly the lungs and the stomach. More than 2000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma, and 50 percent will die within 18 months. Although more than 50 countries have banned the outright use of asbestos (including those in the European Union as well as a number of so-called Third World countries), the United States has not. Acceptable substitutes for asbestos exist. It is time for America to catch up with the rest of the world when it comes to asbestos and ban its use.
