Every year significantly more people are killed by people driving drunk than by people firing semi-automatic rifles with pistol grips that politicians like to call "assault weapons". Alcohol is also a big factor in domestic violence.
If our political leaders are so concerned about the safety of children and they want to ban something, why don't they ban something that kills a lot more people in this country than assault weapons: Alcohol
Firing a semi-automatic rifle is also less harmful to your liver.
A lot of gun control people say that assault weapons should be banned because we don't "need" them for hunting, etc. We don't need alcohol either and alcohol is more deadly than guns.
So politicians if you are really concerned about public safety, put your money where your mouth is.
