In the aftermath of the tragic suicide of Leelah Alcorn, I feel the administration should act to stop some of the abuses that led to it. Born a transgender woman, her family never accepted her for who she was, and insisted on forcing Leelah, birth name Joshua, to attend conversion therapy.
Conversion therapy is long proven to be unsound and dangerous, as sexuality and gender identity cannot be changed by such means. As a physical abuse it is banned in many places, but as an emotional abuse, sitting a child down and breaking them down to try to make them 'normal', it is still alive and well. Emotional abuse can destroy just as much as the physical, as we can see in Leelah's case.
I ask the Obama Administration to act and either enforce stricter limits on or ban conversion therapy.
