The practice of using taxpayer dollars to fund the construction of new stadiums for sports teams has proven only to cost the public money for endeavors the sports team owners could afford on their own. It is time this is banned as a use for public funds, and the large amount of money be diverted towards needs more suited to the public good.
Sports teams, their holding companies, and their owners will still be able to maintain positive revenues without leaning on the tax base, even if forced to build stadiums within their financial means. This will serve the taxpayers by removing the burden of sports stadiums and preventing teams from holding the team from leveraging one municipality against the other for monetary bids.
