The electoral college means that some votes more than others, and the first past the post system is designed in such a way that only two parties can exist at a time. Single Transferable Vote means that everyone gets a primary choice of candidates, and if those candidates have no choice in winning than they are transferred. This means that voting for a third party will not doom your second choice of candidate, as well as third parties getting tangible seats in the house and senate.
