We urge the Obama Administration to produce legislation to permanently ban high capacity magazines (defined as magazines holding ten or more bullets).
High-capacity magazines have been used in virtually every high-profile mass shooting in recent history. They show up in about one fourth of violent crimes. There is no viable civilian use for large-round magazines. High-capacity magazines are not commonly used by hunters, as most states ban them from hunting reserves. They pose a threat to bystanders and police officers, who commonly carry 10 to 12 rounds in their handguns.
The harm to society from the distribution of high-capacity magazines far outweighs any inconvenience caused to gun owners. High-capacity magazines have no place in civil society. A ban will improve public safety.
