The coal mining practice known as "mountaintop removal" is incredibly destructive to communities and the environment. It pollutes water supplies, causes birth defects, obliterates historical sites including cemeteries, and is overwhelmingly opposed by the residents of the states most affected by it. The only thing it achieves is that it maximizes profits for the coal industry, which is notorious for its disregard for safety and short-sightedness. Alternatives, including windmills and less disruptive mining practices, will create jobs, meet energy needs, AND preserve the Appalachians which are one of the oldest mountain chains in the world.
