Plastic has important industrial applications in our economy so getting rid of it will not be easy. However many types of consumer plastic are completely non-essential and we would all be better off without plastic water bottles, plastic shopping bags, the thin plastic wrappers around most consumer goods. A selective Federal phase out of non-essential consumer plastics is a key element for sustainability and the protection of our resources on this planet.
