This petition calls for a ban of the patenting of genetic material, and abolish the existing patents of genetic material.
The problems associated with patented genes include the inability to study, modify or even look at cancer destroying genes, patented by a company who owns all the rights to them. Lawsuits against agriculturists who don't use genetically modified seeds made by companies who own the patents to these GMOs. And the monopolization of the niches in the agriculture industry, such as soy and corn.
Genetic patents prevent the spread of scientific knowledge and inquiry. Thus, it is unconstitutional, and violates our 1st amendment rights, which protects the freedom of scientific inquiry and the free exchange of knowledge and ideas.
