This petition is for the ban of the possession, sale and distribution of shark fins nationwide. On July 1, 2011 Hawaii became the first state to ban the possession, sale and distribution of shark fins. Oregon and Washington soon followed with a similar bill in California awaiting signature from Gov. Jerry Brown. On January 4, 2011 President Barrack Obama signed the Shark Conservation Act. The bill was passed through Senate with unanimous consent. The bill prohibited the removal of fins at sea and sharks to be landed without their fins attached. As attempts to ban shark finning become more popular worldwide, the United States could set a huge example for the rest of the world. Populations of many shark species are data deficient and current conservation efforts are lacking.
