Soil erosion is a major problem in the United States; the farming technique of tillage is a major cause of the problem. Tillage is a technique in which farmers plow or till their fields to remove the previous year's crop residue; removing this residue leaves the soil unprotected against the harsh environment causing soil erosion. Adopting the practice of conservation tillage will greatly reduce the amount of soil erosion because it leaves most of the crop residue to act as a line of protection.
Soil erosion is blowing away valuable topsoil which if continued will affect the production of crops. This in turn will affect food production and the U.S. economy.
