Please take the national mood after Newtown as a opportunity to start bringing gun ownership in the USA to a more rational place. Fully acknowledging the Constitutional right to own sport handguns and hunting rifles, this petition asks for legislation to stop the private sale of automatic "assault" weapons.
This petition is intended to give voice to Americans who believe, if we start now, in a generation we can have a country where shooting deaths are reduced toward the numbers in the rest of the developed world. Other developed countries have the same levels of mental illness and of violent video games, but 12 - 50 fold per capita fewer shooting deaths.
