Petition to ban the public disclosure by the media of the identity of anyone committing mass murder in the United States, with the exception of any information released by law enforcement officials to aid in the capture of such persons.
Rationale: Psychologists agree that many of these incidents are committed by disturbed individuals seeking to draw attention to themselves. Banning identification of such individuals would remove the incentive for such individuals to commit these types of crimes.
Some will argue Freedom of the Press, but there is no compelling need to disclose the identity of these individuals to the public, and if banning such disclosure prevents only one such incident, it will have been worth it.
Focus attention on the victims, rather than rewarding the killers.
