It seems logical that the installation of red light cameras would improve the safety of our roads and raise funds for the states. However, as decades of use have shown, this is not the case.
Red light cameras do not improve traffic safety. In documented cases and studies (linked below) they are shown to often cause in an increase in accidents and injuries. They also are ineffective at decreasing the number of traffic violations. Furthermore, red light cameras put the state's benefit at odds with that of the public. Alternatives such as improved signal visibility, longer yellow duration, and all-red clearance intervals are proven to improve safety yet their implementation is hindered by a preference for the revenue-increasing camera.
