Single-use plastic shopping bags make no sense. You go buy a loaf of bread, which is wrapped in plastic, and a gallon of milk, which comes in a plastic jug. After paying for the items with a plastic debit card, you put the items in a plastic bag that holds them for the 12 minute drive home. After the bag has gone through it's 12 minute life-cycle, it sits inside yet another plastic garbage bag, in a landfill, where it will remain for thousands of years.
A reusable shopping bag would not only be infinitely better for the environment, but it might actually be less work since you don't have to do anything with the reusable bag once you take the groceries out.
Let's make some actual progress instead of pretending like we are. Let's make better use of the plastic instead of wasting it.
