Enacting laws and policies that make it illegal to smoke indoors is an action that must happen now. As is stated in a U.S. Surgeon General report, an estimated 123 million people in the United States are regularly exposed to second hand smoke at home, in the workplace, and in other public places. The report goes on to say that research shows inhaling secondhand smoke causes lung cancer and coronary heart disease in nonsmoking adults and that smoke free environments are the most effective method for reducing exposure. In another report the CDC states exposure to SHS is responsible for an estimated 46,000 heart disease deaths and 3,400 lung cancer deaths annually among nonsmoking adults in the United States. These two reports show an immediate need to ban smoking from indoor facilities.
