Smoking is one of the greatest preventable risks to human health. Fortunately most states have banned it in the workplace, and some have done so in restaurants and bars. However, smoking is still a problem outside of government buildings, parks, and many places that receive federal funding. It is impossible to walk by a courthouse or government building and to avoid secondhand smoke. While smoking is a legal adult activity, it should not be imposed on the 80% of the population who does not smoke.
The president can take that extra step to help reduce public smoking by eliminating smoking on any property that is owned by the federal government or that receives federal funds. Anything that can be done to reduce secondhand smoke will only improve public health.
