Corexit is a chemical oil dispersant. It was widely used during the BP oil spill over 2 million gallons and is still being used. This chemical is extremely toxic and there is evidence that when mixed with oil the oil becomes 50 times more toxic. So why is it used? There are many less toxic alternatives such as the use of oil digesting bacteria but the company who makes Corexit Nalco has powerful political influence and close ties with large oil companies. This dispersant only sinks oil below the surface where it wreaks havoc on underwater ecosystems and poisons humans when it washes ashore. This is good for BP and the Gov. because it makes the spill look less severe, out of sight out of mind, but this chemical is causing immense suffering to families in the gulf.
