When ethanol was first required for gasoline to reduce emissions, the promise of using switch grass or other bio mass for future production was made. The future is here and Instead of substituting switch grass for corn, as the requirements for more ethanol have ramped up, production has all been allowed to rely solely on corn. This has resulted in a price increase for corn of over 300%. Since corn is pervasive in foods and feeds, this has also driven up food prices, across the board, not only domestically, but globally, since the US is the largest corn producer in the world.
Stop the madness! Require ethanol producers to move off of corn on to non-food based input material. Big AG and ethanol producers are getting rich on the backs of US energy and food consumers.
