In 19 states, corporal punishment is thriving in schools. It affects black children twice as much, though it is awful no matter who it affects. Studies show that a student is hit by a teacher once every 30 seconds. Only 31 states have abolished it outright. Kids are hit for minor violations, like a tardy, despite the lack of evidence that it changes behavior. The harm allowed varies state to state. Even though it's not front lining any papers, Congress needs to address this. Someone needs to be held accountable. Something needs to be done. If child abuse is illegal, how is corporal punishment in schools not?
