Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, or DEHP is a common endocrine disruptor of the phthalate class. It has been known to cause hormonal alterations in certain concentrations, and although the amount of DEHP used is regulated by the FDA, DEHP can still exert physiological effects at these lower concentrations.
DEHP exposure has been found to act as an estrogen in the body, and having an anti-androgenic effect in men by suppressing testosterone production.
DEHP in higher concentrations has also been found to lead to organ failure, and in animals studies has been found to be carcinogenic.
