This petition seeks to have a law in place that would provide federal protection to protect minors who would otherwise be forced into therapy that has been shown by the American Psychological Association to be extremely detrimental towards the mental health of participants.
Conversion therapy (also known as "reparative therapy") has additionally been shown to be ineffective; most participants do not successfully change their sexual orientation.
This petition does not suggest impairing consenting adults' ability to seek reparative therapy, as they should have the legal right to choose what activities they engage in behind closed doors.
It only seeks protection for those who would otherwise be subjected to treatment for a trait that hasn't been considered treatable for over 30 years.
