During a recent shooting at the Empire State Building, NYPD members fired 14 shots at a lone gunman at close range resulting in the wounding of 9 civilians. Most police are armed with highly lethal hollow point ammunition instead of ball ammunition. Hollow points are designed to create massive injury to the victim and cause them to bleed out quickly. Hollow point bullets are banned for the military by international law because they result in unnecessary suffering to the victim. The American College of Emergency Physicians is opposed to these bullets because of increased risk of infection if jagged bullet edges cut through surgical gloves and skin. Because of the threat to innocent bystanders, especially children, these civilian killing bullets should be banned for police use.
