Safeties (the two point variety) are intended to punish an offense for being downed inside your own endzone. However, if you have a lead and points to give, an NFL team may intentionally take a safety in order to run down the clock, then free-kick from a more advantageous position, thus misusing a safety as a strategy for gain. This is wrong.
