Tear gas is classified as a chemical weapon by both the Geneva Protocol of 1925 and the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993. Its use is banned in warfare, with an exception allowed for domestic use. This exception has been abused by police departments in the United States, most recently against peaceful protesters in Ferguson, Missouri. The United States should treat its American citizens better than enemy combatants, instead of infringing on their First and Eighth Amendment rights.
The use of tear gas against Americans on American soil should be banned.
