Many state-funded colleges and universities employ Web filters (such as Barracuda) to block access to certain sites from their networks. These filters frequently interfere with research and are largely ineffective (often blocking harmless sites while allowing access to some potentially harmful ones). These filters are an unjustified expense, which often must be covered by students' technology fees. As most Web access at colleges is already monitored (and this petition does not suggest that it should be otherwise), such filters are not needed.
