Many individuals currently involved in enforcing our drug laws have admitted to having broken these laws in the past. This presents a mixed message to the American People and to our children. We should have a strong message that recreational drugs should be used responsibly and within the law.
However, when individuals avoid the penalties of the law, and admit to have broken the law, yet attain offices which would have been barred to them under a conviction for these crimes, the lesson is only, "Don't get Caught."
The service of such individuals is also compromised by their past actions. Past drug users may either over enforce as a way of compensation, or under enforce due to empathy. Justice requires unbiased enforcement of the law.
