The United States should make it a felony offense to enter the country without proper permission. Offenders assets could be seized, prison time prescribed and the convict deported. Anyone hiring an illegal immigrant will be aiding a criminal and charged, with potential prison time and loss of assets. A six-month registration period for foreigners currently in the US illegally will be held, allowing them to register and receive temporary green cards. After a background check, successful applicants will then be issued a permanent visiting worker permit with no expiration date. If they remain good citizens they will pay income and other appropriate taxes but can never vote or receive federal benefits of any kind. They can apply for citizenship just like any other foreign applicant.
