Begin the process to admit Puerto Rico as the 51st state, after 61% of voters there chose statehood on November 2, 2012.

Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States since 1898 and its citizens are American citizens since 1917. Although Puerto Ricans are American citizens, they don't have voting representation in Congress and don't participate in the election of the President and Vice President of the United States.
Last Tuesday, November 6, 2012, Puerto Rico held a referendum on its political status. The referendum asked voters whether Puerto Rico should remain a territory; the second one presented 3 non-territorial options.
On the 1st question, 54% said NO to the current territorial status.
On the 2nd question, 61% of the valid votes were in favor of Statehood.
