Dred Scott was denied citizenship by the Supreme Court on March 6th 1857 because he was an American of African Heritage. This came about as part of a running legal battle Mr. Scott conducted to sue for his freedom. In order to get the case heard at the Federal level (out of the Missouri court system of that time), the claim of diverse citizenship was used.
On March 6th of 1857 the court ruled that Americans of African Heritage had no claim to freedom or citizenship.
The adoption of the 14th amendment recognized the rights to citizenship of Americans of African heritage; sidestepping the now infamous decision.
Mr. Scott was right 157 years ago. Posthumously recognize his citizenship and place a small memorial stone on his grave naming him Citizen Dred Scott.
