January 22, 2013 will mark the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade. In this landmark case, the Supreme Court upheld the right of a woman to have the dignity, the privacy, and the ability to make personal decision about their reproductive health. To mark the anniversary of the Supreme Court's protection of this fundamental women's right, I believe that President Obama should bestow the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Sarah Weddington, the lawyer who successfully argued Roe v. Wade. Her contribution to women's rights and the dignity of women cannot be overstated. Furthermore, Weddington has been a tireless public servant, serving as the first woman from Austin to serve in the Texas House of Representatives, General Counsel to USDA, and Assistant to President Carter.
