The tragic shootings of police in Dallas and of African-Americans across the country have raised public awareness of the threats to black and blue lives. We call upon Congress to seek out police officers and African-American leaders for advice on how to change our laws to help mitigate these threats and save lives, and then to combine ideas from both groups into bipartisan legislation to address both issues at once.
This is a framework for legislation that would have advocates from both sides of the aisle and have a strong chance of passing. It would be supported by Black Lives Matter, police officers, and the vast majority of Americans who are supportive of the honorable work of police officers and are concerned about the many recent deaths of African-Americans.
