California has passed a law which will mandate that smart phones sold in their state include a feature which will allow law enforcement to remotely disable smart phones (which are communication devices, the use of which is protected under the 1st amendment). This law has been passed under the guise of protecting consumers from theft, by allowing them to remotely disable and "brick" the phones, as well as turn them on; however the real intentions of this law are clear and obvious. This feature explicitly allows LAW ENFORCEMENT to disable phones in order to prevent surveillance, recording, and to suppress free speech at the whims of the government, of which law enforcement is explicitly a part.
