The DEA has issued a notice of intent to place kratom in Schedule I in late September. Millions of Americans use kratom with little to no adverse effects. It is perhaps the safest, cheapest, and most efficacious substance for treatment of symptoms of withdrawal from opioids and is also widely haled as a cheap and safe treatment for depression with a track record of thousands of years of safe use. But because it is a plant and cannot be patented, no pharmaceutical company has a profit motive to do research or file an application with the FDA for kratom to receive approval for treatment of any ailments. Scheduling kratom will further inhibit research into its benefits. Please do not let the people who think cannabis is as dangerous as heroin make this plant unavailable to Americans.
