On June 30th this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that would not only criminalize openly gay and lesbian Russian citizens, but also any foreigners -- including athletes. The law prohibits any and all persons within Russian territory to publicly address their sexuality if they are homosexual. This is not only reprehensible to human rights, but is in direct violation of the moral code of the Olympics -- where only the spirit of competition and athletic performance matter, and not factors such as sexual identity. Therefore, this petition is to stand in solidarity with the millions of russians, and foreign spectators and athletes who will be systematically marginalized by this law, in hopes the white house will urge the USOC to boycott 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Russia.
