The Joint Service Open House was cancelled for a second year in a row due to budget cuts in the Department of Defense. While this makes sense, I think the value of the JSOH is not being adequately represented. It not only provides income to local businesses and vendors, it serves an important function in the community and for families. The cost of the JSOH, which is approximately $2.1 million, can be easily offset by charging a small to moderate admission fee to the air show. Currently there is no admission cost so it is funded entirely by the taxpayer. Charging an admission cost and getting sponsorship by leading corporations in the Aerospace industry can not only bring back this important community event, but can make it profitable.
