Bring back Paper US Savings Bonds

Created by N.D. on March 07, 2013

Have you ever tried to gift an electronic US Savings Bond to a minor?

To buy a bond as a gift for someone else, that person must already have an account established at the Treasury Direct website. So if you want to give a bond to a minor, a parent has to set up a custodial account first.

On top of that, the entire concept of a "Savings Bond" is abstract enough to be difficult to explain to a 6 year old. Being able to physically hand the child a very official looking piece of paper, and explain that it means the government owes him or her money helps a lot. The way things are now, you can't even give the child anything physical to represent your gift.

Americans have problems saving money already, lets not add road blocks.

Please reinstate the sale of paper bonds via executive order
