The US government does not believe there is sufficient reason at this time to begin construction of a Death Star. Reasons listed include “Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?”, as well as citing overwhelming cost, and a disinclination to destroy other planets. A fleet of X-Wing fighters would be immeasurably less costly than a giant battle station, but would still offer a degree of defense should another world choose to pursue a Death Star construction project. Additionally, such fighters have also proved effective against smaller craft such as TIE fighters and Star Destroyers.
