A space elevator is an emerging technology that would cut costs of lifting payloads tenfold. The technology could be pioneered by NASA and used to launch future scientific missions, and future private companies could use the trail blazed by NASA scientists for cheap and easy access to space for developing space resources such as special manufacturing processes, tourism and possibly even mining.
