We whiskey producers and lovers alike call on the White House to work with the United States Congress to recognize rye’s rightful place as America’s whiskey. Rye is the country’s original distilled spirit. Enjoyed since the 1600’s, President George Washington was among the first distillers of rye on his Mount Vernon property, colonial merchants purveyed it up and down the original thirteen colonies, the first American citizens swigged it in first cities, and pioneers used it to keep the chill off in the cold northern winter. A robust and stubborn grain that packs a northern flavor to its southern cousins, rye is making an impressive comeback as more people come to discover and love this bold whiskey.
