Rampant corruption in the government of President Yanukovych led to mass protests in Ukraine. At least 75 people are dead following a violent crackdown orchestrated by Yanukovych.
While the fighting continued, Ambassador Pyatt stated that the U.S. does not believe that Yanukovych should step down: "Our position is the President Yanukovych needs to lead his country into a new future."
This is the same President Yanukovych who led state police to kill their own people. What possible"new future" could he bring?
We claim to be a beacon of freedom and democracy. Neither is possible in Ukraine under Yanukovych rule.
We should stand up for our ideals. The United States government should call for early elections in Ukraine.
